The 2026 NFL schedule is slowly feeding through ahead of a full release on Thursday, May 14.
Official broadcast partners have started to announce select games, and NBC will air a very familiar clash in Sunday Night Football’s Week 1 slot.
The New York Giants will host the Dallas Cowboys at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, September 13.
It will mark the 13th time that the two NFC East rivals will open the season against one another.
This year’s game will also be the eighth time in the last 15 years that the Giants and Cowboys will meet on Week 1.
Dallas has won 11 of their 12 season-opening match-ups against New York over the years, meaning Dak Prescott & Co. will probably relishing another trip to the Meadowlands.
NFL fans, though, aren’t particularly inspired by NBC’s choice to air it in primetime.
Giants vs Cowboys Week 1 branded ‘very bad’ SNF game
“Nobody wants this for the 1,000 time,” one wrote on X, responding to the announcement.
“Y’all do this every single year, can you guys please give the NFC East some time to breathe before they gotta fight?” another asked.
“Two teams who missed the playoffs?!? Great work giving us the battle of mid,” a third said.
“I can’t remember the last time the Giants and Cowboys game wasn’t shoved down our throats on primetime. There’s some interesting stories here, but the on field product will be awful to watch,” a fourth suggested.
“That’s a very, very bad match-up man,” a fifth concluded.
The Cowboys last visited MetLife Stadium for a Week 1 contest back in 2023, and routed the Giants.
Dallas won 40-0 in a game that saw a blocked field goal returned 58 yards for a touchdown on the opening series.
The Cowboys then scored on a pick-6 later in the first quarter, en-route to an embarrassing shut-out in New York.
Things, though, were more even when the two teams met in 2025.
Dallas secured a 40-37 win in a Week 2 overtime thriller at AT&T Stadium, and went on to lose the season finale 34-17.
In recent years, match-ups between the teams have been high-scoring affairs, which perhaps played into the decision to showcase the Week 1 opener in primetime.
The Cowboys now know two games on their 2026 schedule, as they will also feature in a previously announced international contest.
What other games have been announced for 2026 NFL season?
Dallas will play the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, for what will be the NFL’s first ever game in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
A record nine international match-ups will be played across four continents, seven countries and eight stadiums in 2026.
The other game already made official will see the San Francisco 49ers play the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia, as part of NFL Kickoff weekend on September 11.
Meanwhile, the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks will bring the curtain up on the new season, at home on September 9. Their opponent has not yet been announced.
A preseason Hall of Fame Game, between the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals, is set for August 6, ahead of the start of the regular season.
