Shane Lowry has been forced to seek a new teammate for the Zurich Classic.
This has led to an unlikely partnership with five-time major winner Brooks Koepka for the tournament in New Orleans.
Lowry needed a new partner when Rory McIlroy decided to skip the event following his win at The Masters.
The back-to-back Augusta winner had long planned to scale back his PGA Tour commitments to focus on the majors.
That is already paying dividends by scooping the first major of 2026, to take his career tally to six.
Lowry and McIlroy are long-time friends and have paired up for the Zurich Classic for the past two years, winning the event in 2024.
Former Open winner Lowry is now with American Koepka at TPC Louisiana this week and the pair are already cracking jokes with each other.
Lowry told The Golf Channel: “I asked about 10 or 12 other guys first and they all said no. Rory quickly said after last year, I don’t think he wanted to come back.
“It wasn’t until the end of the year I was doing my schedule, and I was going to add this in, that I knew I needed to start looking for a new teammate.Â
“I met Brooks down in Florida at a place where we both practice just after Christmas and mentioned that I might need a partner for New Orleans.Â
“He said he’d be up for it and it kind of went from there. I said it to his caddy, Ricky [Elliott], a couple of weeks later.
“Then I saw Brooks a few weeks after that and said, are we going to tee it up together? And he said yes. So, nice to be here.Â
“You have to have multiple majors to be able to team up with me in this tournament. It’s good that he said yes.”
Koepka himself was then asked about how quickly it took him to make up his mind and say yes.
He said: “I remember it. He was actually sitting at a table with Rory when he asked me.Â
“I think it was either December or January. I forget what it was. It was around that time.
“I think at the time when he asked me, I wasn’t sure what my playing schedule was going to be.Â
“I’m just happy to be here and happy to be a part of it. I’m thankful to have a good partner and we’ll see how the week goes.”
Lowry’s promise
Koepka was the first alternate for the PGA Tour signature event RBC Heritage last week, but no place was forthcoming.
He would have been handed a place had someone from the 82-strong field withdrawn.
Speaking to the PGA Tour, he said: “I can look at myself as to why I didn’t play last week. I think it was like 1.4 FedExCup points shy. I mean that’s one shot through the whole year thus far and I would have been in.
“So it would have made at least planning the rest of the year a whole lot easier because right now it’s kind of up in the air, but I did it to myself.”
Lowry was quick to interject and add: “You’ll be alright after this week.”
The odd-couple
In a separate interview Lowry also addressed the fact that it looks like an odd relationship from the outside.
Koepka is the man from Florida who joined LIV Golf in 2022, but returned to the PGA Tour this year. His outwardly serious demeanour is epitomised by his spiky relationship with Bryson DeChambeau.
Meanwhile, Irishman Lowry is never seemingly without a smile on his face.
He said: “On the outside, it might not look like it makes sense, but to us it does.
“I think the ball, everything about it, you know, we do have a good relationship and we’re going to have a good bit of fun out there.”
