Character concerns saw Shedeur Sanders tumble from a first-round pick in many mocks to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Teams are investing too much to make decisions purely on what they see on tape and, like it or loathe it, unnamed sources taking shots at prospects in the media is part of the process.
This year’s contender for talking himself out of a few landing spots is apparently former Miami passer Carson Beck.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer published comments that suggested some teams view Beck as a “bit of a loner.”
“There’s this sense that this guy is a villain,” an AFC coordinator reportedly suggested.
Beck threw for 3,813 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2025 before falling to Fernando Mendoza’s Indiana in the national championship game.
While Mendoza is heading for Las Vegas with the No. 1 pick, Beck is expected to be available in the second round and potentially beyond.
“He’s talented enough, smooth, on time, sees it well, he’s smart — probably the smartest kid in the class,” one NFC coordinator told Breer. “But the personality is tough. I wouldn’t touch him.
“Big kid, very smart, another guy that’s well prepared from the neck up.
“He has a big enough arm. He’s a marginal athlete, but I think he’s got the ability to navigate the pocket, does a good job of mitigating bad plays, and his sack avoidance is good — the sacks he takes are minimized. He just plays within himself. He was asked to do more at Georgia, but he’s capable of all that stuff, as far as controlling what’s out there.
“Floor is a good backup, and I would be surprised if he’s a low-end starter.”
Beck could be the third QB off the board after Mendoza and Ty Simpson.
He has met with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, which would both be solid landing spots with no clear long-term starter in the building.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero has heard differently to Breer.
In a chat with Rich Eisen, the analyst claimed that he “can’t 100% rule out” Beck landing in the first round.
He added that the ex-Hurricanes star will go higher than many are predicting and will probably be snapped up in the second round.
Carson Beck’s NIL haul
Thanks to NIL, Beck enters Thursday’s NFL Draft with plenty of stock in the bank.
Arch Manning is the best-paid player in college sports, taking home an estimated $6.8 million in sponsorship, per On3.

Second was Beck, who took home an estimated $4.3 million after landing in a major media market with the Hurricanes.
He already earned enough at Georgia to buy a Lamborghini.
“I got a car. That’s really all it is,” he said at the time. “Obviously a lot of people are going to look at it and say what a terrible decision, what a terrible choice with his money. But it’s just a car at the end of the day.”
Assuming he goes in the second round, the 23-year-old will earn $7-13 million over a four-year rookie deal, meaning he is taking a pay cut in annual salary.
Mendoza didn’t even crack the top 20, but has the Heisman Trophy and estimated $54.6 million contract with the Raiders as a consolation.
