Bryson DeChambeau has been warned that the PGA Tour will not back down amid his supposed bid to return from LIV Golf.
The future of LIV Golf has recently been thrown into doubt, with the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) recently pulling its funding.
That has led to some golfing superstars who made the switch to the Saudi-backed breakaway project looking for a way back.
Earlier this week, former Masters champion and Ryder Cup winner Jon Rahm agreed to pay £2.2million to the DP World Tour.
But if he wants to return to the PGA Tour, some further severe financial punishments could come his way, after Brooks Koepka took a $90million penalty to come back in January.
DeChambeau, who has been linked with a comeback after LIV’s funding was withdrawn, is more than aware of that too.
He addressed the rumours on Tuesday, calling for the PGA Tour to ‘drop their egos’ when it comes to welcoming him back.
The American wants officials to come into negotiations with a level head, considering what he can do for the game of golf.
DeChambeau went on to say that he’d ‘love to play tournaments that want me’, while explaining he ideally wants to grow his YouTube channel, which currently has almost 2.7million subscribers.
Reacting to those comments, Rupert Bell, talkSPORT’s golf correspondent, said: “He’s positioning himself for sponsors’ invites.
“We know that he’s one of the biggest draws, through his YouTube channel and through his play, he’s an eccentric character.
“He’s good for the game, whatever you think, because he draws people in. I think it’s an element of throwing down the gauntlet.
“I just see this as DeChambeau positioning himself as ‘come and get me if you want me’ as he knows sponsors in the US and around the world want him.”
DeChambeau warned
However, talkSPORT’s Simon Jordan has warned the 32-year-old that his stance may not end up working out how he’d like.
“DeChambeau will not beat the PGA,” Jordan said on Thursday.
“The PGA did not back down, they didn’t blink, they may have been a bit more honest on certain things.
“But sponsors won’t dictate to them that Bryson should come back in at any cost.
“They’ll perhaps suggest they want him in there, but not at any cost.”
‘He’s a game-changer’
DeChambeau has taken a bold stance when it comes to potential talks with the PGA, but Bell believes it’s warranted.
He said on talkSPORT’s White and Jordan: “He’s not shy in coming forward with his own view of the world and that he is a game-changer… but he is.
“The YouTube phenomenon is huge now in golf, but he doesn’t want to be playing in a series of exhibitions.
“He’s still a young man, he probably still wants to view himself in a sporting sense and the majors are the pinnacle.”
Bell added: “We’ve just seen Rahm capitulate on his demands and pay a £2.2m fine so that he can now play on the DP World Tour.
“The big names are just now starting to realise that we’ve got to court the traditional tours now. LIV is going to be a different beast, whatever kind it is, next year. They’re looking for investors, but they’re never going to get anywhere near than before.
“So, DeChambeau is trying to get in early and is maybe trying to back the USPGA Tour into a bit of a corner, as what the tour is likely to hear from their sponsors is likely, ‘We want him, so sort it out’.
The YouTube impact
Meanwhile, despite his doubts over DeChambeau’s chances of breaking down the PGA Tour, Jordan does think his YouTube channel can be valuable if he can find a way to utilise it.
“We see the YouTube influence, we see the likes of Jake Paul and that inside sport it has generated massive outcomes,” Jordan said.
“I don’t know how that can be parlayed into the golf world, in terms of broadcasting, and if he’s playing in tournaments, how can he shoot those tournaments? I’m presuming he can’t use YouTube?”
Jordan continued: “We know that DeChambeau have 2.7 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, which is infinitely monetisable.
“He’s about the money, there’s nothing wrong with that… how he orchestrates that, I don’t know.
“They can’t broadcast him playing in golf tournaments, the PGA Tour aren’t going to give him the rights to do that.”
