Coventry City stars will be out on the town having clinched the Championship title, but don’t expect Frank Lampard to be among them.
The Sky Blues ensured a first-place finish on Tuesday with a 5-1 thrashing of Portsmouth at the Coventry Building Society Arena.
Having already secured automatic promotion last Friday against Blackburn Rovers, the Championship title was the cherry on top in what has been a dream season for Lampard’s side.
With a return to the Premier League after 25 years away now secured, Coventry’s players have more than earned a celebratory pint or six.
How Lampard celebrated Coventry winning the Championship
Lampard may crack open a can himself, but it won’t be in the public eye as he lifted the lid on Coventry’s celebration plans to Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy on talkSPORT’s Sports Bar.
When asked if he’d join his players on a night out, Lampard replied: “I’m going home.
“I’m a bit older and and I prefer to keep my head down at times now. I would have gone out for three days back in the day.
“The lads can go out tonight, I’ve given them a couple of days off there and they deserve it, because all the work’s in their legs through the season anyway and these are moments to enjoy.
“This doesn’t happen that much, there’s a lot of tough moments in football. People talk about my career and go, ‘Oh, you won this and that.’ I remember lots of seasons not getting what I wanted in lots of different ways.
“When you get it, enjoy it. The boys can enjoy it tonight.
“They need to be ready for Wrexham because we need a good account of ourselves in the last home game and we’re hopefully going to get the cup after the game.
“They’ve been a great group, they’re a really good bunch of lads, they’ll go and have a drink tonight or whatever they want to do.”
When will Coventry be crowned Championship winners?
As Lampard stated, Coventry are expected to be officially coronated as kings of the Championship when they host Wrexham on Sunday at 12pm.
Although Lampard is hopeful his side can precede the title celebrations with a win, Wrexham will be no roll-overs.
The Welsh side sit sixth in the Championship with two games remaining, meaning they are on track to qualify for the play-offs.
However, Wrexham are level on points with seventh-placed Hull City and are separated by just two goals in terms of the differential.
Viva Las Wrexham!
Given the importance of a win for Wrexham, co-owner Rob Mac cheekily extended an invite to Lampard for an all-expenses-paid trip to Las Vegas.
“Congrats to @Coventry_City!!!!” Mac wrote on X.
“My friend @VancityReynolds and I would like to offer you a first class trip to @Vegas.
“Please be ready in the am and be back in time for kickoff on Sunday. A little late is okay too.”
Wrexham go into Sunday’s fixture on the back of two consecutive wins, the latest being a 1-0 victory over Oxford United on Tuesday.
The Welsh outfit then round out the season on May 2 against fellow play-off contenders Middlesbrough, who are winless in their last seven league fixtures.
