David Moyes described Evertonâs defending as âs*****â as his frustrations were evident after their draw with Man City.
The Toffees conceded a late goal for the third straight game as Jeremy Doku hit a 97th minute equaliser in the 3-3 thriller at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Doku scored two as they escaped Merseyside with a point that now hands Arsenal the advantage in the Premier League title race.
The Belgian winger gave the Cityzens the lead at the Hill Dickinson just before half-time with a curled effort.
Barry’s a Gooner
In the second-half, Marc Guehi allowed the Toffees back into the match when he underhit a pass back to Gianluigi Donnarumma. Thierno Barry intercepted and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Things went from bad to worse for Pep Guardiola’s squad as Jake O’Brien headed home in front of the South Stand.
Barry added his second in the 81st minute, having only been substituted on just 17 minutes earlier, to put him on for an unlikely hat-trick.
The Hill Dickinson was in party mode at 3-1 up, as David Moyes hoped to mark a memorable night under the lights for Evertonians at their new home – and for his old player, Mikel Arteta.
However, Erling Haaland instantly reacted, charging through the defensive line of James Tarkowski and Michael Keane to make it 3-2.
Everton tried to stay compact as the fourth official held up five added minutes, however in the 97th minute Doku produced another curled effort that Jordan Pickford could not keep out.
Post-match frustration
Moyes was confused by the amount of time the game continued for after the allocation of five extra minutes, but was clear it was not the sole reason the Toffees lost out on all three points.
He spoke to talkSPORT and said: “I think the rules are if you are bringing a substitute on in added time, you add 30 seconds on, and we put two on.
“If you think, one [Tim Iroegbunam] was already off the pitch when we did it, and we sent the boy [Harrison Armstrong] on straight away.
“I donât think it was necessary to add 30 seconds on to that but if the referee [Michael Oliver] was following the rules, I can understand why he added two minutes and 30 seconds.
“What I canât understand is why there is no penalty kick due to the foul on Merlin Rohl from Bernardo Silva at the corner kick. It shows how anything goes now.
“We were denied a penalty against West Ham and it should have been given. Tonight was another one and it definitely shouldâve been given.
“But thatâs not the reason why we didnât take all three points. It was the s***** goal [Haaland’s] we conceded straight from the kickoff.”
Pattern of heartbreak
Everton have been on a streak of conceding in injury time, losing vital points in their race for European football.
Their first heartbreak came against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, where Virgil van Dijk headed home a dramatic 100th-minute winner, snatching all three points from their city rivals.
The next weekend, Everton played against a relegation-threatened West Ham and missed out on a draw due to a Callum Wilson 92nd-minute winner.
And finally, on Monday night, another staggering strike at the death stopped Everton from gaining maximum points and leaves their chances of a return to Europe looking slim.
Moyes complimented his players: “The first half we were completely outplayed, probably as poor as we have been for a long time, certainly against the better teams this season but great credit to Manchester City, they are a very good squad.
“The good part was we were only 1-0 down at half-time. We were still in with a shout and we proved we were much much better in the second half. We were a lot more aggressive in how we played and we got the rewards from it.
“Letâs be truthful, we missed a couple of chances as well, so did they but we had a chance to go 4-1 up, with Illy [Iliman Ndiaye] through on goal as well.”
Everton have been awarded the least amount of penalties this season, alongside Liverpool and Burnley.
In the last three seasons, Everton have been gifted seven penalty kicks, the same amount as Leeds United – they were in the Championship for two of those seasons.
Moyes spoke about a decision he thought was an obvious call, as his side sat at 3-2 up in the final moments, City captain Bernardo Silva tussled with Rohl, dragging the midfielder to the ground as James Garner’s corner kick happened.
Moyes remained adamant about the appeal: “These decisions can affect us, for VAR to not intervene at West Ham or even tonight, itâs absolutely amazing it wasnât given.
“Next time, Iâll set my defenders up to grab and hold players down and I will not be expecting a penalty kick to be given in return. The referees are making it so, so difficult for themselves.”
