Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni is one of the names on Manchester United’s radar as the club looks to bring in at least two senior midfielders this summer, talkSPORT understands.
The France international is currently contracted until 2028 and there is no guarantee Real chose to sell. In fact, talkSPORT understands a contract extension is also possible.
However, the LaLiga club are working on funding their own midfield revamp and may need to raise funds. Man City’s Rodri is among their leading targets, while Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has flirted with a move to the Bernabeu and is waiting to see if Real make an approach.
Even if Rodri doesn’t extend at Man City, which is the club’s preference, the Ballon d’Or winner will still command a significant fee should Pep Guardiola’s side choose to sell, while Chelsea will not entertain a Fernandez exit at a book loss.
Sources close to Tchouameni insist he’s happy at Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has made 44 appearances this season, scoring two goals. He is valued by Real at in excess of £70m.
Manchester United view adding multiple midfielders as their top priority this summer. A number six like Tchouameni is the most pressing concern following the departure of Casemiro.
A second more versatile central midfield is also likely to arrive. United are debating whether they require a midfield metronome profile or more of a box-to-box number eight.
Tchouameni, who was targeted by Manchester United in 2022 when at Monaco, is one name United are prepared to explore but other options for each position are also being looked at as well.
Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remains the club’s top target, but United face heavy competition from Manchester City. And Forest staying up, and even potentially qualifying for the Champions League via winning the Europa League, could further complicate negotiations.
Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali is also appreciated but viewed as too expensive when fee, wage and commissions are factored in. Brighton’s Carlos Baleba was approached last summer and the player had indicated back then he was keen on the move. Brighton never quoted Manchester United a fee at the time.
And Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton has admirers within the club, but is seen as quite similar to Kobbie Mainoo in profile making a move less likely as it stands. Mainoo has now agreed in principle to a new contract keeping him at Old Trafford until 2031 with a formal announcement expected between now and the end of the season.
Wolves’ Joao Gomez, Bournemouth duo Alex Scott and Tyler Adams, Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller and Atalanta’s Ederson are among the other names considered.
Manchester United are in for a busy summer and with Champions League football looking likely, a big spend as well. The club intends to sign a left-winger, a full-back and, if Joshua Zirkzee is sold a striker is not ruled out.
There is also a chance a centre-back and a back-up goalkeeper also arrive. The latter will be contingent on selling both Andre Onana and Altay Bayındır.
Inside Devils verdict
talkSPORT’s chief football correspondent Alex Crook gave his verdict on Man United’s midfielder search in the latest episode of Inside Devils on YouTube.
I think he’s definitely a player that Real Madrid would be open to offers for and the reason I think Tchouameni makes a lot of sense is that he has a lot of the same characteristics as Casemiro, which is obviously gonna be a big part of the summer.
How do you replace him? I thought he played really well again at Chelsea on Saturday night and
Players from outside the Premier League tend to be more cost-effective, certainly in terms of transfer fees. He comes on big wages being a Real Madrid player, which maybe goes against a little bit of what Ineos are trying to do.

We know the names that are out there from within the Premier League.
Sandro Tonali. I keep being told if he had his way he would go back to Italy, maybe AC Milan rather than swap Premier League clubs.
Elliot Anderson. Who Manchester City are keen on.
Adam Wharton. Who I reported last week that Liverpool are keen on.
Carlos Baleba is a link going back to the summer and the January window.
So the names are well documented. I think they do need two midfielders minimum because Ugarte is going to go for obvious reasons.
I think what we’ve seen in the last couple of games against Leeds and against Chelsea is that the squad is really light even when they’re only playing a minimal number of games a season.
When it comes to Champions League, and you’d like to think the domestic cup runs were going a lot longer next year, then suddenly you’re talking about playing 60-70 games a season, so the squad looks really short.
The other name that’s come up to me a couple of times, and again this might tie in with what happens with Bruno Fernandes, is Morgan Gibbs-White at Nottingham Forest if they are looking for a more attack minded midfielder.
Quietly, he’s had a really good season at Forest. He’s scored more goals this season than any other point in his career and I think if they don’t win the Europa League and therefore get Champions League football I think he’s a player who will be looking to move on and push on for the next level.
