Cesc Fabregas has recalled the conversation with Jose Mourinho that encouraged him to join Chelsea, despite a potential Arsenal return.
The World Cup winner with Spain left his boyhood club Barcelona for the second time in 2014 having won six trophies in three seasons.
Fabregas completed a reported €33million (around £29m) transfer to Chelsea in a move that saw him return to the Premier League.
He had previously made 212 appearances in the English top flight for Arsenal, who he joined from Barcelona in 2003 at the age of 16.
Manchester City were also keen on the midfielder but it was Chelsea who bagged his signature, with the help of manager Mourinho.
Speaking to talkSPORT host Rory Jennings on his YouTube channel, the now Como head coach Fabregas explained the move.
“It’s true that at the beginning, my thought, once I decided to leave Barcelona and I wanted to go back to the Premier League, my first thought was, ‘I’m going back to Arsenal’.
“Arsenal had a buyback clause that lasted, I think, two weeks by the time we told them I’m leaving Barcelona, they had two weeks to activate the clause.
“Obviously they were aware of it, they didn’t take it, and even though I was a little bit surprised, I have to look after myself.
“I was only 27 years old, I was at the peak of my career, I wanted to do well, I wanted to keep winning, I wanted to keep performing. It’s true that I had a couple of options, with Man City and Chelsea.
“But once Mourinho came to talk to me, for me, it was over. When I spoke to Jose, he drew the team that he wanted, he told me about Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois, Filipe Luis, et cetera.
“He told me, ‘With this, this, this, we could win the league’, and he was right. We won the double, if I’m not mistaken? The Carling Cup and Premier League.”
‘Oh, Fabregas is magic…’
It didn’t take long for Fabregas to make an impression on the Chelsea faithful, despite his ties to London rivals Arsenal.
He assisted two goals on his debut in a 3-1 win at Burnley, including a sumptuous first-time ball into the box to Andre Schurrle.
Fabregas ended his first Blues campaign with five goals and 24 assists, as well as Premier League and League Cup winners’ medals.
His goal contributions dropped to 15 the following season, as Chelsea crumbled and finished tenth.
They regained their spark under Antonio Conte in the 2016/17 season and Fabregas won another league title.
Fabregas won the second FA Cup of his career, the first of which came at Arsenal, in May 2018 and then left for Monaco just months later.
His final appearance came in the FA Cup against Nottingham Forest and, when substituted, he was in visible tears.
Chelsea fans still acknowledge him today with their ‘Oh, Fabregas is magic…’ chant, and could be reunited amid his links with the vacancy.
