Olympic pole vaulter Alysha Newman has been banned from athletics for 20 months for missing drugs tests.
Newman won a bronze medal for Canada at the 2024 Paris Olympics – where she made the headlines for her twerking celebration – but has not competed since a Diamond League meeting in May 2025.
It was revealed in February that the 31-year-old had been suspended for breaking anti-doping whereabouts rules.
The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) said Newman was unavailable for an unannounced doping control in February last year, and twice more in August.
A ‘whereabouts’ failure is an anti-doping rule violation that occurs when an athlete does not submit accurate location information or is unavailable for scheduled testing.
Athletes are required to specify a one-hour period each day where they will be available to give a sample for testing.
After Newman’s third incident, the AIU said in its published verdict that she had told a doping official ‘she had to leave immediately to participate in the filming of a television game show’.
End of the road
Newman has since been punished for her actions, receiving a 20-month suspension, which expires in August 2027.
While the Canadian received a substantial ban, hers was less than the standard two years for whereabouts cases.
This was ultimately because the AIU accepted that the Olympic bronze medallist has decided to retire from athletics.
On their reduced ban, the AIU said Newman’s retirement ‘is a sufficiently unique/exceptional factor that may be considered in assessing her level of fault in the matter’.
It brings an eventful end to the pole vaulter’s career, who has won both a gold and bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.
Newman has also competed in two world championship finals, and took bronze at the 2019 Pan American Games.
Online presence
The biggest and most talked about moment of Newman’s career came when she clinched bronze at the 2024 Paris Games.
But it wasn’t the athlete’s personal best of 4.85 metres to make the podium that caught the eye, but rather her celebration afterwards.
After successfully clearing the mark, Newman ran off the crash mat and pretended to be injured, before doing a quick twerk dance.
This alerted many to the existence of her OnlyFans profile, and prompted some to label the move a stunt to drive subscribers as a result.
With the social media platform widely known for selling X-rated content, Newman was forced to defend herself from critics but soon began to reap the rewards.
Having regularly shared content from her training sessions on the site, reports in September 2024 claimed she had earned at least $155,800 from her new wave of subscribers during the Olympics.
Newman has spoken publicly about her OnlyFans presence, insisting she is able to use her online profile in a positive way.
Speaking to Bild in 2024, she said: “I post a lot of my training sessions, talk about nutrition and lots of tips and tricks.
“I earn money with what I post – you have to log in to find out. It makes me confident and I feel good about it.
“Of course, many people have a certain cliché when they think of OnlyFans. I can’t change many people’s minds.
“But this website has connected me with many fans, more than any other pole vaulter before.”
